It was customary among the Greeks to hang the abandoned weapons of the defeated or fleeing enemy on trees on the battlefield. These signs of victory, or Trophies, have acquired their place over the centuries in the decoration of furniture and interiors.
Since then, trophies have not only been used in the decoration of these war and victory monuments, but are increasingly used in the elegant decoration of buildings, castles, churches, paneling or as tasteful decoration in interiors.
Later on it became quite normal that hunting weapons were used in these trophies, because they bear a lot of resemblance to weapons of war.
Symbols in a carved trophy
By grouping tools, instruments... trophies can radiate a certain symbolism, just as war and hunting also become a specific trophy for the arts such as music, the seasons, architecture, painting...or astronomy, science, ....
Singing, for example, is symbolized by the winch and this with or without scores. Music by flutes, horns, pan flute, violin.... Dancing through a tambourine and castanets. Acting through a mask and painting through palette and brushes. Sculpting stone and wood, by placing a hammer and chisels in the trophy.
The different arts and metiers have thus chosen their own symbols where you can recognize their trade or art, later we will see companies and associations depicting their products or services in a trophy.
